Travel Information

The workshop will be held at the Rutgers Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy in downtown New Brunswick, New Jersey. Here is a google map of the location.

Getting to New Brunswick from Newark Liberty International Airport:

The cheapest, easiest, most efficient way is to use public transportation. Once you have claimed your luggage, follow the signs that say "Airtrain". Take the airtrain (it's free) to the RailLink station. Go up the escalator to the mezzanine and go to the large orange and blue New Jersey Transit ticket kiosks. Buy a ticket to New Brunswick, which will cost you $14.50. The machines take cash or credit cards. Once you have your ticket, proceed to the gate access to New Jersey Transit. Insert your ticket into the machine, and don't forget to take it, as you'll need it to board the train. Proceed to the farthest platform (marked as "toward Philadelphia") and go down the escalator. Wait for the Northeast Corridor train (usually marked as going to Trenton). Be sure you board a train that lists New Brunswick as a destination, it usually is. New Brunswick is a stop on all local trains and most express trains.

Getting to New Brunswick from LaGuardia or JFK International Airports (New York)

The best option for this travel might be to take a shuttle between the New York Airport and Newark Airport, and then follow the instructions for Newark Airport (above). Inquire about shuttle prices and availability at the information desk. You can also take a taxi to New York Penn Station and then follow the instructions regarding travel from New York in general (below). The taxi should cost you $20-30 in light traffic from LaGuardia and possibly a bit more from JFK.

Getting to New Brunswick from Philadelphia International Airport

Just as for the New York airports, the easiest option may be public transportation, albeit with a bit more hassle. Once you arrive, follow the signs that say SEPTA. Board the train and tell the conductor you want to go to Trenton. The fare should be ~$10 cash. You must have cash, and having the exact amount is very much appreciated. Once you reach Philadelphia's 30th street station, exit the train, and be sure to take your ticket/receipt with you. Board the next train to Trenton. (If you need help figuring it out, ask at the information desk.) When you arrive at Trenton, go upstairs and find a New Jersey Transit ticket kiosk. Buy a ticket to New Brunswick, which should cost you $8.50. Watch the monitors and wait for your train to be assigned to a track. You're looking for Northeast Corridor trains going to New York, although make sure New Brunswick is a destination for this train. Once your train is assigned a track, proceed to the proper track and board the train.

Getting to New Brunswick from New York in general

Go to the 7th avenue entrance of New York Penn Station (located at 32nd street and 7th avenue). Go down the stairs and toward New Jersey Transit (on your left). Go to the large orange and blue New Jersey Transit ticket kiosks. Buy a ticket to New Brunswick, which will cost you $13.00. The machines take cash or credit cards. Once you have your ticket, watch the monitors to see when your train is assigned a gate. The trains you want will be listed as Northeast Corridor trains to Trenton, although make sure New Brunswick is on the list of destinations before you board. When your train is assigned a track, proceed to the proper track number and down the stairs.

Once you have arrived at the New Brunswick train station, you can walk virtually anywhere. There are campus buses that run between the New Brunswick campuses. The EE bus runs right through the city. You can find information regarding routes, frequency, etc. at http://parktran.rutgers.edu/campusbuses.shtml. I'm not exactly sure of the schedule at the time of SOAS because classes will be over and it is likely the schedules will change somewhat. You can also visit the "next bus" site from your phone and it will provide you with very details information about the next bus if you enter your route and bus stop location.

Places to stay in New Brunswick:

The Hyatt is virtually across the street from the train station.

The Heldrich is virtually across the street from the meeting site at Bloustein.

Rutgers Continuing Studies Center. The room rate is $69/night. It's a bit farther than the others. You can get there via the EE bus.

Food Information:

Continental breakfast, coffee breaks and light lunches will be provided at the conference on Thursday and Friday. Dinner for Thursday will be organized in New Brunswick, walking distance from Bloustein.
